We here at Lear wish you the best for the Holiday Season!
/Reading well is a gift for a lifetime. Whether we are reading aloud or listening, a story becomes interesting when the pitch, pace, and volume of the voice is varied.
When there is a flow in the phrases and certain words are drawn out or shortened, we understand more clearly. As the timbre (the emotional quality of the voice) changes, we identify more with the characters and follow the story more intently. These aspects of expressive reading are part of reading fluency.
As a student’s reading speed, accuracy and comprehension grow, he will no longer need to sound out each word or to read in a monotone. By developing reading fluency with awareness of punctuation, he will learn when to pause, when to stop, and to raise his pitch at the end of a question. He’ll learn to show appropriate emotion when reading a quotation. He will learn to slow his pace for emphasis and to quicken it to show excitement. As the student reads a story, he will be lending his own original creativity to the tale with his unique presentation of the printed words.
Being able to express emotion in the telling of a story not only delights the student, it also encourages and motivates him to read more, to become even more fluent.
Reading fluently is necessary whether reading to oneself for pleasure or for learning. Spelling skills are required for reading accuracy. Properly grouping words and phrases while reading so that an entire sentence makes sense is basic to understanding the written material.
A concept related in a paragraph can’t be understood unless the sentences themselves are understood. Speed is needed so that the student can read to the end of the paragraph while remembering the beginning and the middle of it. Reading fluency allows the student to concentrate on the subject material, making reading to learn more effective.
