Academic Coaching, SAT, ACT Prep – Maximizing High School Achievement
/With academic coaching, a student is guided and motivated toward realizing their potential. At Lear Educational Center, we encourage the student to appreciate their academic accomplishments and reinforce confidence that more can be achieved. We provide motivation, tutoring, and guidance as our students advance with a winning attitude.
The high school student is called upon to do a significant amount of independent learning, critical thinking, and composition, such as they will be doing in college. A strong knowledge base, reading and writing proficiency, and solid study skills are needed by the high school student.
Along with the student’s performance on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Testing exam (ACT), the student’s high school grade point average (GPA) is a major factor considered by colleges during the student’s evaluation for admission.
Independent learning in high school usually extends beyond the material presented in class and that which is available in the text books. It often includes outside research and critical thinking.
High school courses demand a good deal of study and homework time on a daily basis. Assigned projects require additional hours for the gathering of information and the writing of reports as well as for preparation of presentations.
During the high school years, there is usually an increase in extra-curricular social activity. The student needs good study habits and self-discipline more than ever to succeed scholastically. Effective time management skills and focus strategies are necessary.
High school reading skills build upon fluency and comprehension as well as the ability to analyze and evaluate. Vocabulary requirements grow at a rapid pace, requiring keen memory and spelling skills.
As the student reads classical as well as modern works of literature, he could be comparing one work of writing with another, one time period with another, or one style of writing with another.
Good writing and exposition skills are needed as the student is expected to organize, summarize, and express their thoughts in the majority of his courses. The student is usually assigned to do some original creative writing, and often to read their original creative writing aloud to the class.
Proper preparation of the material, reading fluency, and public speaking skills contribute to successful presentations.
With history and geography, in addition to learning the facts presented, the student is often called upon to consider the impact of world events and geographical features on current affairs. The student develops enhanced comprehension skills as well as a stronger ability to analyze information so as to make predictions concerning outcomes.
In higher level math courses, the student needs draws upon prior knowledge as well as new learning to determine the formulas to be used to solve increasingly complex problems. Critical thinking and abstract mathematical thinking are required to succeed in such subjects as high school algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.
Standardized college admission testing is taking place. Reviewing, refining and refreshing knowledge and skills helps to ensure your student's doing well on the SAT or ACT tests as well as their classroom success during the school year, boosting that all-important GPA.
At Lear Educational Center, we provide test preparation for the American College Testing (ACT) exam, the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and other standardized tests. Some colleges require both SAT and ACT scores, some neither, some request one or the other. All colleges consider the scores, making test results a key component in the evaluation of the student’s application. Performing well in the standardized tests is especially important for the student with a lower grade point average who seeks college admission.
At Lear Educational Center, academic coaching and tutoring are individualized, directed toward filling in gaps in the student’s learning, advancing the student’s knowledge as well as comprehensively reviewing the academic material included in the standardized tests. We help our students develop proficiency in reading, comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, writing, math, study skills, and test-taking strategies. In addition, the student gains a working knowledge of the format and typical content of the specific standardized test as we work with practice tests.
At Lear Educational Center we provide one-to-one academic tutoring on all levels, primary through college, for most subjects and for most standardized tests. We interface with schools, working with the curriculum appropriate for each student. We accommodate and compensate for learning differences, helping students meet IEP and remediation goals. Our students learn foundational skills and strategies so that they can better understand their current coursework and meet the challenges of tomorrow.
