Making the Next Marking Period Better

Marking period grades often point out a student’s need for remediation. Catching up early on is necessary because new material presented in class builds upon foundational knowledge. Students also need to use effective study techniques for scholastic success.
Components of the marking period summary include classroom participation, homework, quizzes, tests, reports, and projects.
Taking notes in class and doing homework regularly prepares students for active participation in classroom discussions and to answer questions when called upon. This is also a good time to ask questions about material they do not fully understand.
Many students do their homework and fail to check their answers. Correction of wrong answers must be done for the student to learn the material properly. Repetition of errors leads to future failure as the class moves on to build upon previous learning.
Students often lose credit when they do not hand in homework, projects, and reports on time. Taking note of instructions is necessary. Students often lose credit for errors which could be spotted by taking the time to review and proofread what they are about to submit.
Quizzes allow the student to assess how well they are doing with a particular section of a study unit. As with homework, students can avoid needless mistakes by reading the instructions carefully and checking their answers before handing in a quiz.
Questions regarding quiz mistakes should be asked and answered so that the student is ready to learn the material in the next section of the course.
Not only do quiz grades matter toward the overall grade, they are optimal test study guides regarding what the teacher considers most important to learn in that section. Extra attention should be given to the material covered in quizzes in which the student did not do well.
Students who are doing well with their homework, quizzes, and classroom participation still need to thoroughly review the material that will be included in tests, especially subject matter covered early on and perhaps forgotten. As with homework, quizzes, projects and reports, students need to be mindful of following the instructions and thoroughly checking their answers before handing the test in.

New material is presented step-by-step with the student demonstrating his understanding of the new material, having his questions answered and his new knowledge reviewed. Study strategies, learning and executive function skills also are taught so that our students can best meet the classroom challenges of today as well as those of tomorrow.
